5 LASIK Myths and Misconceptions

Since LASIK (laser vision correction) first came on the scene in the late 1990s, the procedure has changed the lives of literally millions of people all over the world. Since its earliest forms, LASIK has been a safe and effective method of correcting refractive errors (poor vision). Yet, despite the procedure’s solid success rate, a few myths and misconceptions persist.

Here, at Ighani Eye Care, we have many patients who want to learn more about LASIK. And many of them are great candidates for the procedure! We sincerely love to help our patients step into visual freedom without the hassles and restrictions of glasses and contacts with All-Laser LASIK.

Here are a few of the most common myths and misconceptions about LASIK that we see:

Misconception: LASIK isn’t safe.

Fact: LASIK is a safe and effective outpatient procedure that has been performed on millions of patients all over the world. Its safety, quality and side effects have improved as technology has advanced over the years.

Several studies have been conducted since LASIK received FDA approval in 1999, and in recent years, it has even been proven that having laser vision correction is less risky than wearing contact lenses as directed. Additionally, more than 90% of eye surgeons who perform LASIK would recommend it to friends and family who are candidates.

Misconception: If you blink during your procedure, it can damage your eyes permanently.

Fact: Now that’s a scary thought! But the truth is, it’s not possible to blink during your procedure, so there’s no need to worry about that. Blinking is actually stopped by the placement of an instrument called a lid speculum, which gently holds back your upper and lower eyelids. Dr. Ighani will place it after you receive the anesthetic drops.

Misconception: LASIK doesn’t last.

Fact: This one is a fairly common misconception. LASIK creates a permanent change to the cornea, so the treatment will not fade over time. However as the eye ages, vision problems that are unrelated to the corneal surface can still occur, most often presbyopia (over-40 vision) and cataracts. When we assess your vision at Ighani Eye Care, we will test for and determine which vision-correcting procedures is right for you.

Misconception: LASIK hurts.

Fact: This one is a big concern for many people. Most of our patients describe the sensation during LASIK as little more than a slight pressure. Before we begin your procedure, we will apply numbing drops, and we can also provide oral relaxation medication beforehand, if needed.

Misconception: LASIK has a long recovery period.

Fact: For people who are extremely nearsighted, it might take a little longer to recover than individuals who are only slightly nearsighted. Although many of our patients wake up the next day with 20/20 vision, it is normal for some patients who have stronger prescriptions to take a little more time for their eyes to adjust and heal. But we’re proud to share that most of our LASIK patients are back to their regular routines the very next day!
