What is LASIK?

LASIK is an acronym for a mouthful of a term (Laser-Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis). It is a type of refractive surgery commonly referred to as laser vision correction. LASIK treats nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

So if you wear glasses and/or contacts, and you fall into one or more of the above-mentioned categories, LASIK may be a great choice for you!

At Ighani Eye Care, we understand that LASIK isn’t right for everyone. In fact, you might notice that Dr. I wears glasses himself. That’s because he’s not a perfect candidate for LASIK. And he is committed to making sure every person he recommends LASIK to is an ideal candidate. He simply won’t perform LASIK on anyone who isn’t!

How Does LASIK Work?

It’s amazing, really. LASIK works by changing the shape of your cornea, which changes the way images focus on the retina. It’s a revolutionary yet simple two-step process:

  • Step One
Creating a small flap on the cornea
  • Step Two
    Gently reshaping the corneal surface

All in just a few minutes!

How Can I Know if LASIK
is Right for ME?

Determining if you are a good candidate for LASIK is the first and most important step! Good outcomes depend on several factors, including technology and the skill of your surgeon. And to a large degree, favorable outcomes depend on careful screening to make sure each patient is a good candidate for the procedure.

This is one area where we really shine. Dr. Ighani meets with every candidate personally to go over every little thing that goes into determining if LASIK is a good fit for you and your unique eyes. He will only recommend LASIK for those who meet all the criteria for excellent LASIK candidates.

Here’s what you can expect from your FREE LASIK consultation at Ighani Eye Care: a complete and thorough exam with custom mapping of your eye to determine if LASIK is the right choice for you.

Once the Ighani Eye Care team has given your eyes the thumbs up, you’ll learn everything you ever wanted to know about LASIK (and more!).

LASIK FAQ

We’ve collected the most frequently asked questions we hear from individuals interested in learning more about LASIK and compiled them here with some straightforward, easy-to-understand answers. If you have a question that is not covered here, just give us a call! We’re here for you!

This is the question we hear the most! Most of our patients describe the sensation during LASIK as little more than a slight pressure. At the start of the procedure, Dr. Ighani will apply numbing drops. No injections! You may also be given oral relaxation medication beforehand. Most patients tell us they experienced little to no discomfort and are back to most normal activities the very next day!

You’re going to love this answer. In the vast majority of cases, LASIK takes less than 10 minutes for both eyes! In the amount of time it takes you to take out and clean your contacts or find your lost glasses, you can achieve visual freedom! Awesome, right?

Every patient is different with their own unique eyes, so the answer; it depends. Patients who are extremely nearsighted might take a little longer to recover than those who are only slightly nearsighted. Although many of our patients wake up the next day with near 20/20 vision, it is normal for some patients who have stronger prescriptions to take a little more time for their eyes to adjust and heal completely.

It’s not uncommon for some patients to experience mild side effects. The biggest side effect we have in our area is dry eyes because of the harsher Texas environment. Other side effects can include double vision, or even seeing halos around lights for a few weeks. Many of these side effects will resolve on their own.

Another common concern! Let us put your mind at ease. Blinking is actually stopped by the placement of an instrument called a lid speculum, which gently holds back your upper and lower eyelids. Dr. Ighani will place it after you receive the anesthetic drops.

At Ighani Eye Care, we offer straightforward, all-inclusive pricing for our LASIK procedures. We don’t offer gimmicky specials or buy one eye, get one free pricing models. We have one simple LASIK price for everyone. It may not be the cheapest in town, but it is straightforward, comprehensive and includes all your pre- and post-op appointments as well as surgeon and facility fees. And it comes with the very highest level of care for your eyes! We will be happy to give you this price at your free, no-obligation LASIK consultation.

LASIK is classified by most insurance companies as elective surgery, meaning it is not a covered expense. But making eye care affordable for everyone is something we are passionate about at Ighani Eye Care. Check out our FINANCING PAGE to learn more about our pricing structure and affordable payment plans.

Since the eyes do not fully stabilize until a person is in their late teens or early 20s, it is required that patients be at least 18 years old to have LASIK. We will also want to see you have a steady eye prescription that hasn’t changed for over a year.

No worries here. We offer several LASIK alternatives that you may be a better candidate for! A no-obligation LASIK consultation is a first step in determining which vision correction procedure is right for you.

This is a common misconception. But the short answer is NO, it doesn’t. LASIK creates a permanent change to the cornea, so the treatment will not fade over time. However as the eye ages, vision problems unrelated to the corneal surface can still occur, namely presbyopia (over-40 vision) and cataracts. When we assess your vision at Ighani Eye Care, we can determine which of our many advanced vision-correcting procedures is right for you.
