It may be the month of love, but February also marks an important observance in eye health, as it is dedicated to raising awareness about Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and low vision. At Ighani Eye Care, we’d like to take this opportunity to share about the importance of early detection, the challenges faced by those affected with the condition, and the resources available to support people living with AMD and low vision.
What You Need to Know About AMD
Age-Related Macular Degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. This is a condition that has a hereditary factor and significantly impacts the person living with it. By dedicating February to AMD awareness, we want to encourage regular comprehensive eye exams, early diagnosis and proactive management of the condition.
AMD is a degenerative eye disease that affects the macula, which is the central part of the retina and is responsible for sharp vision. AMD manifests in two main forms: dry AMD, which is characterized by slow progression and accounts for most cases, or wet AMD, which can lead to rapid vision loss. Recognizing the symptoms and risk factors is crucial for early intervention and positive outcomes.
How is AMD Treated?
Treatment for dry AMD begins with having routine eye exams (annually), especially after age 60. The goal here is early detection! Our experienced providers, Dr. Farshid Ighani and Dr. Brian Anding each have significant experience in diagnosing and treatment for many eye conditions, including AMD.
If we detect AMD at your eye exam, we may prescribe a combination of nutritional supplements. This supplement is called AREDS2, which is a special combination of vitamins and minerals that have been shown to slow the progression of the condition.
Wet AMD treatment can include a number of options, including intravitreal injections that inhibit the growth of the abnormal blood cells that cause wet AMD.
What you Need to Know About Low Vision
February also shines a spotlight on the challenges faced by people living with low vision. Low vision can be defined as a significant visual impairment that cannot be fully corrected with standard eyeglasses, contact lenses, medication or surgery.
Low vision can develop as a result of a condition like AMD or glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinopathy or a congenital cause. Vision rehabilitation services, assistive technologies and support groups can play a large and important role in helping individuals with low vision better adapt to their visual challenges, maintain their independence and lead fulfilling lives.
