Happy Healthy Aging Month!

Healthy Aging Month

This September, Ighani Eye Care is celebrating Healthy Aging Month by ensuring your eyes and vision are well-taken care of for years to come. We encourage you to invest in your eye health, starting with a baseline evaluation so we can understand what problems may arise in the future.

Thanks to advanced technology, we are now able to detect eye diseases before you even notice symptoms. The faster we treat these diseases, the better your outcomes will likely be, so scheduling a medical eye exam at your earliest convenience is important. At Ighani Eye Care, We Care. You’ll See.

At your medical eye exam, your doctor will evaluate your eyes for a wide range of common eye diseases. Depending on your age, this can include cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, keratoconus and more. Let’s take a closer look at some of these eye issues and what you should know about them.

Cataracts

As we age, cataracts inevitably form in our eyes’ natural lens. They are characterized as the yellowing or clouding of those lenses, leading to a whole host of life-disrupting symptoms. Making sure you get your eyes checked by the time you turn 60 is important because it allows your doctor to see how your lenses are doing and when you might need cataract surgery.

Because cataracts develop slowly, it can be hard to notice their impact on your life until the worsened vision due to cataracts causes an accident or injury. At Ighani Eye Care, we want to treat your cataracts before they get to that point. So what should you be looking out for? There are several common symptoms, including dull, discolored vision, halos around lights, difficulty seeing in low light situations and frequent glasses or contacts prescription changes.

Though these symptoms can negatively impact your life, cataracts can be treated effectively with surgery. Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures performed annually in the United States. At Ighani Eye Care, our doctors are well-trained in laser-assisted cataract surgery, which allows for better outcomes and faster healing times. Plus, with premium lens replacements implanted during your cataract procedure, you could decrease or even eliminate your dependency on reading glasses.

Dr. Ighani and Dr. Anding would both be honored to help you when it comes to cataract treatment. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us either over the phone at 682.688.2020 or visit our appointment scheduling page. Whether you know you have cataracts or not, we are eager to meet you and your eyes so we can promote healthy aging this month and every month!

Glaucoma

Another common vision problem that can arise as we age is glaucoma. Characterized as a buildup of fluid in the eye, glaucoma is common for those who have diabetes as well as those 60 years of age or older. Though glaucoma is not necessarily a result of aging, it becomes more common in older age demographics. The increased amount of fluid in the eye places undue pressure on the optic nerve, eventually leading to irreversible vision loss. In fact, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States.

The most common type of glaucoma (open-angle glaucoma) does not typically produce symptoms until patients start to notice vision loss. Once the optic nerve is damaged and vision is lost, modern medical technology cannot restore it. So, it is crucial to ensure your eyes are regularly checked for signs of glaucoma before it causes significant, life-altering changes to your vision.

Luckily, those diagnosed with glaucoma have several treatment options available to them. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, Ighani Eye Care would be more than eager to discuss the best course of action for your treatment. Please feel free to reach out when you have time to set up an appointment!
