From work and school to social media and television, digital screens are part of daily life for just about all of us. But spending hours on computers, tablets, and smartphones can take a toll on your eyes. Many people today are experiencing a phenomenon called digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome.

At Ighani Eye Care, with locations in Bedford, Texas, and Southlake, Texas, we help many of our patients reduce screen-related eye discomfort and protect their long-term vision.

What Is Digital Eye Strain?

Digital eye strain describes what happens when your eyes become fatigued after extended screen use. Common symptoms can include:

  • Blurry or fluctuating vision
  • Dry or irritated eyes
  • Eye fatigue
  • Frequent headaches
  • Neck and shoulder discomfort

These symptoms often occur because your eyes are having to constantly refocus and adjust while viewing digital displays. With the average American adult spending between 7 and 10 hours a day on screens, it’s not surprising that many people are dealing with the effects of digital eye strain.

How Common Is Screen-Related Eye Strain?

Digital eye strain is becoming increasingly common. Studies estimate 50–70% of people experience symptoms of digital eye strain. Additionally, up to 90% of heavy computer users report some level of eye discomfort.

With remote work, online learning, and smartphone use increasing, eye strain is becoming one of the most common vision concerns eye doctors see today.

Why Screens Make Your Eyes Work Harder

There are several factors that contribute to digital eye strain, including:

Reduced Blinking

You may not realize it, but you blink significantly less while using screens, which can lead to dry eye symptoms.

Constant Refocusing

Digital text and images require your eyes to constantly adjust, which increases eye fatigue.

Screen Glare & Blue Light

Lighting, glare and display brightness can add additional stress to your eyes, especially if you are someone who uses digital devices for much of the day.

Longer Screen Time

The more time spent on devices, the greater the strain placed on the eyes.

“We’re seeing more patients experiencing vision discomfort related to extended screen use,” said Dr. Farshid Ighani, Board Certified Ophthalmologist and founder of Ighani Eye Care. “The good news is that with the right adjustments and regular eye exams, digital eye strain is quite manageable.”

How to Reduce Digital Eye Strain

Simple adjustments can make a big difference in comfort for your eyes. We encourage our patients who are dealing with digital eye strain to:

Follow the 20-20-20 Rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Adjust Screen Position

Keep screens about 20–28 inches away and slightly below eye level.

Reduce Glare

Use proper lighting and adjust screen brightness whenever possible.

Blink More Often

Blinking often helps keep eyes lubricated and comfortable.

In some cases, you may be dealing with chronic dry eye in addition to your digital eye strain. We have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating dry eye and are able to offer advanced treatments for real and lasting relief.

Protecting Your Vision in a Screen-Focused World

Digital devices are essential in modern life, but your eyes still need proper care and adequate rest. Routine comprehensive eye exams and healthy screen habits can help prevent long-term discomfort and maintain clear vision for years to come.
