Does Insurance Cover Cataract Surgery?

Does insurance cover cataract surgery? Learn what Medicare and private insurance include, what premium lenses cost, and how Ighani Eye Care can help you maximize benefits.

If you are one of the approximately 20 million Americans who have cataracts, you are likely interested in understanding the ins and outs of insurance coverage for cataract surgery. It’s something we are asked about often at Ighani Eye Care.

Great news. The answer is “yes”. In most cases, insurance covers cataract surgery, but the details depend on the type of insurance you have and the type of procedure and lenses selected.

Generally, Medicare Part B covers medically necessary cataract surgery (the removal of the cloudy lens and insertion of a basic intraocular lens, or IOL). Most private insurance plans also cover cataract surgery when it’s deemed medically necessary (meaning the cataracts significantly impair your vision). If you go with a premium lens, like multifocal or toric lenses that correct astigmatism, you will have some out-of-pocket costs.

One factor that can get a bit confusing is the type of cataract surgery as there are two: traditional cataract surgery and laser-assisted cataract surgery. Both are straightforward outpatient procedures performed in just minutes. Both are generally safe and enjoy excellent success rates.

We offer both surgery options here at Ighani Eye Care, but we do love to talk to our cataract patients who are good candidates about the many additional benefits of FDA-approved laser-assisted cataract surgery.

“Laser-assisted cataract surgery performs the critical steps of cataract surgery for us,” explained Dr. Ighani. “It is more precise, more accurate, decreases risk, is FDA-approved to correct astigmatism that can even reduce your need for glasses after cataract surgery.”

Traditional cataract surgery, as described above, is typically covered by Medicare at 100%, while the laser-assisted option has an out-of-pocket portion you will be responsible for. Our experienced insurance specialist would love to chat with you about all the options available to you, answer all of your coverage questions and help you maximize all of your benefits as you plan your cataract surgery.

He is a skilled and sought-after eye surgeon.

Maximize Your Benefits at Year-End
