What Is Clear Lens Exchange?

If you’re tired of depending on glasses or contact lenses but aren’t an ideal candidate for LASIK, there may be another option worth exploring: Clear Lens Exchange, also known as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE).

This advanced vision correction procedure replaces the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens, or IOL, designed to address your unique vision needs. The procedure is similar to cataract surgery, but there is one significant difference: Clear Lens Exchange is performed before a cataract has developed.

“For the right patient, the Clear Lens Exchange procedure can provide long-term vision correction while also eliminating the possibility of developing a cataract in the natural lens later in life,” said Dr. Farshid Ighani, founder of Ighani Eye Care and board-certified ophthalmologist.

How Does Clear Lens Exchange Work?

During the procedure, the eye’s natural crystalline lens is carefully removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens. The IOL is selected based on vision, eye health and lifestyle goals.

Clear Lens Exchange may be used to correct:

  • Nearsightedness
  • Farsightedness
  • Astigmatism
  • Presbyopia, the age-related loss of near vision that makes reading and other close-up tasks more difficult

Because the procedure replaces the natural lens, it differs from LASIK and other laser vision correction procedures, which reshape the cornea.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Clear Lens Exchange is often an option for adults over 40 who are experiencing presbyopia and becoming increasingly dependent on reading glasses, bifocals or progressive lenses.

It may also be considered for people with significant nearsightedness or farsightedness who fall outside the ideal treatment range for LASIK. Patients with thin corneas, dry eye or certain corneal irregularities that make laser vision correction less suitable may also benefit from discussing Clear Lens Exchange with one of our experienced eye specialists.

Of course, the best way to determine whether Clear Lens Exchange is right for you is through a comprehensive evaluation of your eyes, vision and overall eye health.

One Procedure, Multiple Lens Options

One of the benefits of Clear Lens Exchange is the variety of lens options available. Depending on your eyes and vision goals, different lenses may be used to prioritize distance, intermediate or near vision. Our experienced surgeons will help you determine the right lens for you.

Options can include monofocal, multifocal, toric and extended-depth-of-focus lenses. Some lenses are specifically designed to address astigmatism, while others can provide a broader range of vision and reduce dependence on glasses.

The right lens is not necessarily the same for every patient. Your lifestyle, hobbies, work and expectations all play an important role in determining which option may be best for you.

What to Expect on the day of Your Procedure

At Ighani Eye Care, Clear Lens Exchange is typically performed as an outpatient procedure at our in-office surgical suite. Patients love the convenience of being able to have their procedure completed in the same comfortable, convenient setting they are familiar with.

The surgery itself generally takes about 10 to 15 minutes per eye. Recovery is generally quick, with many patients noticing improved vision within the first few days and continued improvement as the eyes heal and adjust.

Is Clear Lens Exchange the Same as Cataract Surgery?

The procedures use similar surgical techniques, but they are performed for different reasons.

Cataract surgery removes a natural lens that has become cloudy and replaces it with an artificial lens while Clear Lens Exchange removes a natural lens while it is still clear to correct refractive errors and reduce dependence on glasses or contacts. Because the natural lens is replaced, that lens cannot later develop a cataract.
